I finished Uni very disappointed that I studied entrepreneurship and not even once was I taught how to work with the government. Yes the lecturers would mention some bodies here and there but the last time I was in class actively discussing government agencies was probably in form 2 before I dropped History which I only remember the Agrarian Revolution if I’m to be honest.
Like it or not, the government is the enabler of businesses in the country. There’s only so much you can do without them. I’m not talking about getting tenders from them, even mama mboga needs a stable government in order to operate.
If the government is the enabler of businesses, then what institutions has it put in place to help its citizens? This question led me to do my research which I’ll share here. We have some amazing institutions and agencies that seek to help entrepreneurs and all Kenyans. Are they all functioning as they should? I’ll let you share your experience 🙂 But on the real, we need to make more use of some government agencies. Part of wanting to do this is because I speak based on a lot of ignorance sometimes and I’m sure many of us do so. So I’ll enlighten you as I enlighten myself.
This corporation seeks to encourage more youth to be job creators and not job seekers and uses entrepreneurship as the driver for their goal by providing easy and affordable financial and business development support services to youth who are keen on starting or expanding businesses. They’re of course most popularly known for their youth loans. Comment below if you know anyone who has benefited from the youth fund. And if you have, share with us how you went about it.
This program provides business funds at the constituency level to women, youth and differently abled people in order to promote and improve businesses and enterprises. So as youth, other than the Young Enterprise Development Fund, we also have access to the Uwezo Fund. This is especially if you have a venture in your constituency
This authority is all about entrepreneurship in Kenya and its role in transformation of our country. MSEA plans to spark industrial revolution by undertaking policy reforms and implementing targeted programs and activities in the MSE sector, with a view to creating jobs. According to their website, the authority seeks to create conducive working environment for MSEs, enhance MSEs access to markets, enhance entrepreneurial and technical skills the MSE sector, develop and promote gender participation and inclusion of vulnerable groups, establish and implement legal, regulatory and operational mechanisms for the MSE sector etc
If your enterprise involves international trade or you aspire to carry such trade, then you need to know more about KenTrade. They have an online platform known as Kenya TradeNet System that serves as a single entry point for parties involved in international trade and transport logistics to lodge documents electronically, for processing, approvals and to make payments electronically for fees, levies, duties and taxes due to the Government, on goods imported or exported in the country.
Are you looking for a government business incubation center? You might want to check out KIRDI which offers business incubation facilities among other services such as Industrial Research Technology and Innovation Solutions and also Industrial technology Capacity building and training. KIRDI also has research scientists who guide entrepreneurs through the requirements for getting KEBS standardization and quality marks. So before you go to KEBS, you could consider first going to KIRDI.
I’m sure we’re all familiar with standards and quality control watchdog in our country aka KEBS. This body ensures that our products meet local standards and also international standards with increased globalization.
This is the body that protects industrial property rights. Industrial property includes patents, utility models, industrial designs and trademarks. If you want to understand what is considered intellectual property then contact KIPI and they will gladly assist you.
Are you running an SME? Then this is for you! KIE was established to facilitate development and incubation of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) countrywide by establishing industrial parks, providing credit and business development services (BDS) in a sustainable manner.
KIBT are the government gurus in training Business Development Services. Some of their training programs include: Business start-up for youth, Business Plan Development, Generate your Business Ideas (GYBI), Small Business Management for Women, Group Project Management and Management of Business Finances among many others
This is probably the most famous government agency in Kenya. Hardly will anyone talk about Tax and not mention KRA. Important question though, do you file your returns? KRA undertakes weekly trainings so be sure to check out their website if you’re in need of training. KRA is responsible for the assessment, collection and accounting for all revenues that are due to government
CAK is established under the Competition Act, No. 12 of 2010 (the Act). The Authority’s mandate is to enforce the Act with the objective of enhancing the welfare of the people of Kenya by promoting and protecting effective competition in markets and preventing misleading market conduct throughout Kenya.
I’m pro investments and KenInvest helps me know the direction the government is taking in investments and also, they regularly update investment opportunities in various sectors of the economy. Their main objective is to encourage investment into Kenya by both local and foreign-owned companies.
Retirement is almost a guarantee. Sadly, more people are being retrenched today before they reach their retirement age. So how are you securing your retirement?
